World's largest step well!

This week, Ikka Dukka takes a trip to this step well, only 6 hours away from Delhi! Chand Baori in Abhaneri village is the largest stepwell in the world with 3,500 narrow steps and a depth of about 64 feet. We can’t help but admire the impeccable design and perfect symmetry, even though the structure was constructed over 1,200 years ago.

In the dry and arid weather of the desert state of Rajasthan, step wells were crucial for water harvesting and also became epicentres of social gathering and religious ceremonies.

Chand Baori served as inspiration for the sets of movies like The Dark Knight Rises by Christopher Nolan. The structure looks like a fascinating maze with a constant play of light and shadow on its walls. We recommend you visit in the winters to be able to walk comfortably around the complex.

The area is filled with age-old statues and sculptures that were destroyed by invaders. The socio-political climate of Rajasthan kept changing over the centuries, but the charm of Chand Baori is yet to wear off from the minds of its visitors.
